Rev. Ron Miyamura

Supervising minister of the Cleveland Buddhist Temple.

Ron is the resident minister at the Midwest Buddhist Temple in Chicago, and is also supervising minister of the Twin Cities Buddhist Association (Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN).

Rev. Miyamura graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and attended the pre-ministerial candidate version of the Institute of Buddhist Studies, before going to Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan where he earned his master’s degree in Shin Buddhist Studies. He received his ministerial ordination in 1973.

From 1973 to 1975, Rev. Miyamura served as associate minister at the Midwest Buddhist Temple with the late Rev. Gyodo Kono, the temple’s founding minister. After Rev. Kono’s sudden passing in 1975, Rev. Miyamura served as MBT’s resident minister until 1981, when he resigned from the active ministry.

During his official absence from active ministry, Rev. Miyamura continued ministering the Twin Cities Sangha and continued to assist Midwest Buddhist Temple ministers.

In 2009, Rev. Miyamura became the part-time minister of the Cleveland Buddhist Temple. In 2010, he became the supervising minister of Midwest Buddhist Temple and then, in 2011, MBT’s full-time resident minister.

Rev. Miyamura and his wife, Elaine, live on the North Side of Chicago.

Gary Shobo Jaskula

Minister’s Assistant with Tokudo Ordination, Cleveland Buddhist Temple

Gary comes from the New York Buddhist Church and has been involved in all its activities, including serving as a board member and as temple president.

Beginning in 2001 he studied in the local lay-teacher program started by late Rev. Dr. Taitetsu Unno.

He became an official BCA certified Minister’s Assistant in 2007, helping the resident ministers in various capacities.

He attended Buddhist Studies classes regularly at the CBE-BCA MAP in Berkeley and at Eastern District MAP sessions.  Gary received Tokudo Ordination in Kyoto at the Nishi Hongwanji in 2012.

When its resident minister retired, Gary helped keep the New York Buddhist Church’s ministry going for over a year by providing regular religious services, including funerals, memorials, and community outreach under the supervision of Rev. Ron Miyamura.

Since the installation of the current resident minister in NY, Rev. Earl Ikeda, Gary supports his work by leading weekly meditation sessions, teaching a beginner’s class, an adult education class, and providing religious services as needed.

In 2019 Rev. Ron Miyamura asked Gary to help out in Cleveland on a regular basis.  He comes out at least one weekend each month to conduct services and classes for the Cleveland Community.

Gary is a board member of the American Buddhist Study Center, supporting Hoshina Seki, and leads programs and book discussions on various general Buddhist and Jodo Shinshu subjects as needed.

On the secular side, Gary is a fully trained law librarian, a graduate of Columbia University, and served as Director or Firmwide Manager in major New York law firms for over 35 years.  He retired from this work in 2017 and can now devote more time to the Dharma.  Gary resides in Ghent, NY, located in the beautiful Hudson Valley.
